About the Fellowship
The UC San Diego Breast Imaging Division is pleased to offer a 12-month Breast Imaging Fellowship that provides comprehensive training in all aspects of breast imaging and interventional procedures. We serve a diverse population and are committed to providing compassionate and quality patient care to all. The environment is inclusive, team-oriented, and value-driven. Our fellow graduates have been successful in both academic and private practice settings.
Clinical Experience
Breast imaging fellows receive training in all areas of breast imaging, including screening and diagnostic mammography, digital breast tomosynthesis, ultrasound, MRI, molecular breast imaging, ductography, and image-guided procedures. Interventional procedures include fine needle aspiration, stereotactic, tomosynthesis-guided, ultrasound and MRI breast biopsies, as well as wire-free radar localization.
Our main clinical practice is located at the state-of-the-art Koman Family Outpatient Pavilion on the La Jolla Campus as part of the UC San Diego Comprehensive Breast Health Center, one of only a select number of National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country. Along with our Hillcrest and Rancho Bernardo clinical locations, we serve a diverse population and perform over 35,000 examinations a year.
Educational Experience
Our fellows have the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational opportunities, including weekly multidisciplinary tumor board, didactic and case conferences, departmental grand rounds, and the annual UC San Diego Breast Imaging and Intervention CME Course. Elective opportunities are offered with nationally- recognized leaders in surgical oncology, plastic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, and breast pathology. Fellows will also participate in teaching and mentoring of residents and medical students. There are global health opportunities to serve the underserved population via the UCSD RAD-AID Chapter and the UCSD Health 4 the World Chapter.
Research Experience
We offer exposure to clinical and translational research and other scholarly activities. UC San Diego is one of the sites for the I-SPY 2 Trial for neoadjuvant treatment of locally-advanced breast cancer. Fellows may choose to collaborate with faculty on projects ranging from MRI of women's cancers to artificial intelligence, or design their own project. Fellows are invited to author papers with us as well as submit abstracts for scientific meetings.
Applying to the Breast Imaging Fellowship:
One breast imaging fellowship position is offered per year. We welcome all interested applicants to participate in the Breast Imaging Fellowship Match, which is sponsored by the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) and is managed by the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Fellow candidates must have completed a radiology residency to be an ABR Board Eligible/Certified Radiologist, and must obtain a California medical license before starting the program.
Our fellowship program now participates in FellowshipsCAS, a centralized application service for fellowship programs. Applications for the upcoming cycle will be submitted through FellowshipsCAS. The application will open on October 1. The application deadline for this program is December 1, 2026.
