CT Scans with Contrast: Preparation

Before we give you contrast, we will ask you many questions:

Do you have any allergies? Please tell us if you have allergies to any of the following:

  • Medications
  • Antibiotics
  • Iodine
  • Seafood
  • Food

In rare instances, if you should have an allergic reaction, we are well-equipped to handle the situation.

Do you have any kidney problems? Prior to your exam, you may be asked for a lab test to check your kidney function. Why? People with less than ideal kidney function can experience temporary or permanent kidney injury after contrast is given.

Do you have any of the following medical conditions?

  • Diabetes
  • Cancer
  • Asthma
  • Heart Disease
  • Kidney problems
  • Thyroid problems

Are you taking Metformin (a medication for diabetes)? Please let us know of any medications you are taking.

Do you have a port (an access device for medications) or difficult IV access? Please let us know so we are specially prepared to make your scan as painless and efficient as possible.

Is there any chance you are pregnant? Please let us know if there is any chance you are pregnant. This is particularly important during the first 12 weeks of a pregnancy.
