MAGNETIC RESONANCE FELLOWSHIP

As we are no longer participating in the MRI fellowship match administered by the National Residency Match Program (NRMP), fellowship application forms should be downloaded from the link above. Interviews will be held in January and positions will be offered to successful candidates in February.

Our fellows work closely with MR faculty at The UCSD Magnetic Resonance Institute sharing responsibility for the daily operation of 5 UCSD Clinical MR scanners. The MR Institute is a 6000 square foot facility adjacent to the UCSD Medical Center. Laboratory space is available in the building as well as appropriate patient care areas, offices and a conference room. Our MRI program incorporates UCSD Medical Center, the VA Medical Center, and the Thornton Hospital which all have active clinical services. All hospitals are equipped with state of the art MR imaging equipment. In addition there is an active teleradiology service in operation.

The MRI fellows gain superb experience in all aspects of MR imaging including brain, spine, body, breast, musculoskeletal, peripheral vascular and cardiac studies. MR experience, in addition to routine MR techniques includes MR angiography, EPI diffusion (conventional and tensor) and perfusion, spectroscopy and functional MRI. In addition to clinical duties, the fellows have the responsibility of teaching radiology residents, medical students and visiting fellows. Our educational program is enhanced by numerous subspecialty conferences. Ample time is provided for clinical and laboratory research projects.

Research opportunities in MRI abound at UCSD. Graeme Bydder, MD, (creator of FLAIR and STIR), joined us from the Hammersmith Royal Postgraduate Medical School in London in July 2003. MUSCULOSKELETAL IMAGING FELLOWSHIP

The Department of Radiology at the University of California, San Diego offers a fellowship in Musculoskeletal Imaging. It is one year in duration and consists of clinical, teaching, and research responsibilities at both UCSD Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Diego, as well as clinical rotations in osteoradiology at Scripps Clinic. In addition, we have a large MR teleradiology practice which interprets 50-60 MR cases daily.

Dr. Donald Resnick is in charge of the Osteoradiology section. Dr. Mini Pathria, Dr. Christine Chung, Dr. Tudor Hughes, Dr. Amil Gentili and Dr. Lina Chen are the other bone radiologists in the section. They all rotate to both hospitals and spend time at Scripps Clinic

This fellowship has been in existence for approximately 20 years and during that time we have trained 2-5 fellows each year. The program is geared toward but not restricted to the person who is considering a career in academic osteoradiology, a field in which great opportunities exist.

Clinical activities: Each hospital has an active osteoradiology service in which a resident rotates for a 4 week period. The osteoradiology fellow spends approximately 90% of his/her time on the clinical service at either of the hospitals, and 10% of his/her time is reserved for research activities. During the clinical time, the fellow is actively involved in the performance of special procedures. We perform approximately 100 routine radiographic examinations dealing with the musculoskeletal system at each hospital per day. In addition at each hospital, we perform one or two special procedures daily including arthrography, and bone biopsies. The fellow is responsible for performing and interpreting these procedures. In addition, the fellow is actively involved in the interpretation of computed tomograms and magnetic resonance images dealing with musculoskeletal disease. The fellow also becomes knowledgeable in the quantitative assessment of bone mineral content using such techniques as dual photon absorptiometry, computed tomography, and dual energy radiography.

A separate rotation in osteoradiology exists at Scripps Clinic. Fellows take turns spending time at this clinic where they gain further experience interpreting routine and advanced imaging studies and performing procedures. A facility member also is assigned to Scripps Clinic each day.

Fellows also spend 4 weeks in Pediatric Muscoloskeletal Imaging at our affiliated Children’s Hospital, 4 weeks interpreting MR at the San Diego Naval Hospital, and 4 weeks rotating on the Spine Pain service at UCSD under the supervision of the Neuroradiology section.

Teaching activities:The Osteoradiology Service has a weekly one hour conference for radiology residents, a weekly one hour conference for orthopedic surgeons, a bimonthly one hour conference for rheumatologists, a weekly one hour conference in which interesting radiographs are reviewed, a weekly one hour conference reviewing skeletal magnetic resonance studies, a weekly one hour city-wide orthopedic surgery conference, and a monthly conference at Scripps Clinic. The fellow is expected to attend each of these conference and to occasionally present cases to our clinical colleagues.

Research activities: We are fortunate to have a fully funded osteoradiology laboratory on the sixth floor of the VA Medical Center with a full-time technician who is available to help the fellow during his/her research. The laboratory contains the latest radiographic equipment. Furthermore, the laboratory is equipped to allow close imaging-pathologic correlation of musculoskeletal diseases using cadaveric parts.

During the one year fellowship, the fellow is encouraged to organize and complete several research projects dealing with some aspect of musculoskeletal disease. These projects may be formulated on the basis of questions that arise during the clinical aspect of the fellowship. Presentations at national meetings or publications in scientific journals, or both, may result from these research endeavors. Additional research opportunities exist in the areas of quantitative bone mineral assessment and magnetic resonance imaging. Fourth-generation computed tomographic equipment is available at both hospitals and magnetic resonance imaging equipment is housed adjacent to UCSD Medical Center, at the VA Medical Center and at Scripps Clinic.

Additional resources available to the fellow include a teaching file containing more than 20,000 interesting musculoskeletal cases, over 200 teaching videotapes, and digital photography equipment that can be used to make teaching slides.

We provide funding to allow travel to any scientific meetings in which the fellow is presenting the results of his/her research activities. Although each fellow also carries a beeper for night call every 4-5 weeks, only rarely is it necessary for the fellow to report to any of the hospitals.

Each year we have ten to twelve fellowship positions. Interviews usually take place in the winter or early spring, approximately 18 months prior to the beginning of the fellowship. We believe we offer a valuable year devoted to study in osteoradiology with a balanced program devoted to clinical, teaching and research activities. We all are very committed to the training of osteoradiologists and derive considerable satisfaction in seeing their progress.
