Dr. Hopkins came to UCSD in 1993, and after becoming an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine in 1996, joined the Department of Radiology in 2004. She is part of a multidisciplinary group of Physiologists, Radiologists and MR Physicists that make up the Pulmonary Imaging Laboratory at UCSD. Dr. Hopkins received her MD degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's Newfoundland Canada in 1980, and after interning at the Royal Columbian Hospital in British Columbia, spent 4 years working in rural practice in remote areas of British Columbia. She then completed a Fellowship in Sports Medicine at the University of British Columbia, and along with her clinical practice at the Alan McGavin Sports Medicine Clinic, undertook Graduate studies in Exercise Physiology receiving a Master of Physical Education (UBC, 1987) and a PhD (UBC, Interdisciplinary Studies, 1993). Dr. Hopkins' graduate research focused on the effects of exercise on the efficiency of gas exchange in the lung. Dr. Hopkins' current research focuses on the pulmonary under stress, such as hypoxia and exercise. She has been involved in the application of functional MRI techniques to explore lung function in health and disease. Recently, she has shown that increases in pulmonary perfusion heterogeneity in response to hypoxia are a feature of the lung of people who have suffered high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE), which may explain how pulmonary capillaries are damaged in those who suffer this potentially fatal disease. Dr. Hopkins' research is supported by grants from the American Heart Association, and the National Institute of Health. She serves as a reviewer for several Journals including the American Review of Respiratory and Critical Medicine, Circulation, The Journal of Physiology and the Journal of Applied Physiology. She is an Associate Editor of Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews and on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Applied Physiology.
