Dr. Mattrey’s special areas of interest are MRI Contrast, Ultrasound Contrast and Molecular Imaging. As Vice Chairman of Radiology, Director of Research, he has shaped the university’s research program and contributed greatly to advancement in contrast agent research. He is Principal Investigator in several NIH studies, including “Molecular Imaging with Ultrasound Contrast Agents” and “Center of Nanotechnology for Treatment, Understanding, and Monitoring of Cancer”. He is Director of Core Resources, Clinical Investigational Institute at UCSD defining clinical research at the university. He is supervising several clinical trials. He is also Director of In-vivo Cellular and Molecular Imaging Program at UCSD.
As a result of his research and studies he has published over 105 articles and edited a book entitled “Medical Radiology – Diagnostic Imaging & Radiation Oncology.” Dr. Mattrey has received recognition from his colleagues including the 2004 Herbert Stauffer Award for best paper in basic science from Academic Radiology.
He has lectured nationally and internationally. He is active in many professional organizations including Radiological Society of North American where he participates as an abstract reviewer, the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine as a fellow and the Association of University Radiologists where he is an active member on 8 organizational committees.
Along with his research work, clinical work, organizational activities, he is a mentor for young residents and a sponsor of faculty members. He has given over 360 UCSD Radiology lectures.
