Dr. John R. Hesselink had his medical school and diagnostic radiology training at the University of Wisconsin. His graduation was followed by two years of military service in the United States Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base, Great Lakes, Illinois. Following a 2-year fellowship in neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, he joined the faculty there and remained in Boston for another five years. In 1984 he moved to the University of California, San Diego, as Chief of Neuroradiology and Magnetic Resonance. He is presently Professor of Radiology and Neuroscience, Chief of Neuroradiology, and a Vice Chair of Radiology.

Dr. Hesselink has authored over 140 peer-reviewed publications, 27 chapters, and 2 books, including "Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging", edited by Edelman, Hesselink, Zlatkin and Crues. Dr. Hesselink has been co-investigator on over 25 NIH grants. He is presently Secretary of the American Society of Neuroradiology and a member of the ASNR Executive Committee. He has served as Treasurer, Vice President, and President of Western Neuroradiological Society. Dr. Hesselink is a Board Examiner for the American Board of Radiology and for the Certificate of Added Qualifications in Neuroradiology. He is a member of a study section of the NIH-BIB. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1994.
