Experience:

Dr. Comstock graduated from the University of San Diego in 1986, completing a double major in Chemistry and Mathematics. During college, he was awarded an American Heart Association summer student research grant at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla. While at Scripps Clinic, he developed a computer program to allow compartmental modeling from experimental data, and continued to consult for Scripps Clinic while attending Tulane University Medical School. He earned his medical degree from Tulane in 1990 and finished his residency in radiology in 1995 at Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans. Following his residency, he completed a fellowship in mammography at the University of Chicago. Dr Comstock then worked as an Assistant Professor of Radiology at the University of Chicago and later at Northwestern University Hospital's Lynn Sage Breast Center. While in Chicago, Dr Comstock was involved in several projects studying computer-aided detection and diagnosis (CAD) of breast cancer and participated in clinical trials evaluating GE's first full-field digital mammography unit. For 2 years, he was the medical director of the West Suburban Hospital's Center for Breast Care in River Forest Illinois. More recently he worked at Memorial Care's breast centers in Long Beach and Orange Coast California.

Dr. Comstock joined UCSD's department of radiology in 2003 as an Associate Professor of Clinical Radiology and in 2004, became the section chief of breast imaging. While at UCSD, he developed breast MR biopsy techniques and was first in San Diego to perform MR-guided vacuum core needle biopsies. In addition, he helped to plan and directed the conversion of UCSD's breast imaging section to the first completely digital program in San Diego. In 2004 he was awarded a 2 year ACRIN fellowship in clinical trials in medical imaging. He is co-investigator of the planned ACRIN 6674 clinical trial involving MR-guided ultrasound ablation of breast cancer. Future projects include; optical breast imaging, breast CT and ultrasound tomography of the breast. Dr Comstock has written 2 book chapters, been involved in numerous breast imaging publications and has given over 50 invited lectures.
