Deborah L. Harrington, Ph.D.
Professor of Radiology
dharrington@ucsd.edu

Deborah L. Harrington, Ph.D is a Professor of Radiology at UCSD and a Research Scientist at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System.  She is a cognitive neuroscientist with an expertise of in the area of cognitive-motor learning and control in movement disorders and stroke.  Her current research uses fMRI to study the neural basis for cognitive symptoms in Parkinson’s disease and the responsiveness of the brain to dopamine therapy. She is also examining whether genetic factors related to dopamine metabolism and oxidative stress predict the effect of medication therapy on brain activation or disease-related patterns of neural activation.  One long-term goal of this research is to develop task-activated fMRI probes that bridge the gap between biological measures of the integrity of neural circuitry mediating cognitive behaviors and clinical measures, which are descriptive and may be less sensitive in detecting early onset of neurodegenerative diseases, changes in disease progression, and the effects of therapeutic intervention.
