Dr. John R. Hesselink had his medical school and diagnostic radiology training at the University of Wisconsin. His graduation was followed by two years of military service in the United States Navy at Great Lakes Naval Base, Great Lakes, Illinois. Following a 2-year fellowship in neuroradiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School, he joined the faculty there and remained in Boston for another five years. In 1984 he moved to the University of California, San Diego, as Chief of Neuroradiology and Magnetic Resonance. He is presently Professor of Radiology and Neuroscience, Chief of Neuroradiology, and a Vice Chair of Radiology.

Dr. Hesselink has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications, 27 chapters, and 2 books, including "Clinical Magnetic Resonance Imaging", edited by Edelman, Hesselink, Zlatkin and Crues. Dr. Hesselink has been co-investigator on over 35 NIH grants. He is a Past-President of the American Society of Neuroradiology, is a member of the ASNR Executive Committee, and is on the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Neuroradiology. He has served as Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Western Neuroradiological Society. Dr. Hesselink is a Board Examiner for the American Board of Radiology and for Certificate of Added Qualifications in Neuroradiology. He was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Radiology in 1994.

Dr. Hesselink’s areas of clinical expertise are in neuroimaging of the brain, head & neck, and spine. His research interests include the effects of HIV infection on brain function, advanced MR techniques, and neuroimaging of memory, cognition and neuropsychiatric disorders. He also has a special interest in Neuroradiology education on the Internet.
